Abstract

1292777 Tubular heat exchangers; gas cooling installations ARBEITSGEMEINSCHAFT LENTJES-REKUPERATOR 19 April 1971 [23 Feb 1970 26 May 1970] 21174/71 Heading F4S A heat exchanger, in particular a cooler for cooling cracked gases to a temperature of 500 to 550‹ C., comprises an annular array of tubes 16 to which the gases flow via an inlet 4, a distributing cone 8 and a baffle 18, the coolant e.g. boiling water or molten lead or sodium from a centrally-disposed axially directed coolant supply pipe 19 being distributed in a generally uniform manner over the tubes. As shown in Fig. 2 the tubes extend through a casing 13 between end plates 14, 15. The baffle 18 may reinforce the end plate 14 which may therefore be made relatively thin. To minimize thermal distortion the end plate 14 may be thickened in the region of the outlet of the coolant supply pipe 19. The coolant flows from the pipe 19 to a space below an intermediate plate 20, and from this space the coolant flows over the tubes 16 via ducts 31 to an outlet 32. The gas, after cooling in the tubes 16 passes to a coolant hood 34. Overcooling of the gas at the outlet ends of the tubes to a temperature below its dew point may be prevented by thermal insulation and/or a double-walled arrangement of the tube at this end, e.g. 43, Fig. 4 (and Fig. 7), adapted to prevent undue cooling of the tube wall. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 10) each gas cooling tube (75) has its own individual coolant jacket (formed by tubes 74) the casing 13 of Fig. 1 being omitted. Several of these heat exchangers may be connected in parallel and the gas flow from these directed to a further heat exchanger (Fig. 8), a common coolant water system serving all the heat exchangers. The vaporized coolant from such a group of heat exchangers may be collected in a drum (e.g. 51, Fig. 6). The individual heat exchangers may be supported by slinging (see Figs. 1, 7, 10).
