Abstract

757,633. Tubular heat exchangers. SOC. ANON. DES USINES CHAUSSON. Feb. 2. 1954 [Dec. 31. 1953], No. 3123/54. Class 64(3), Relates to heat exchangers in which a liquid is heated or cooled in passing over heat exchange tubes 4 and in which an alternative flow path 24 is provided between the ends of a casing 1 surrounding the tubes so that the liquid, instead of flowing over the tubes in a circuitous path through compartments 7-11 defined by baffles 12-15, may be by-passed direct from the casing inlet 17 to the outlet 18 through said alternative flow path the flow through which is controlled by a pressure operated valve 26. According to the invention at least two annular elements 28, 29 define respectively with the casing wall, inlet and outlet channels for the liquid, these channels 30, 31 communicating respectively through the casing inlet and outlet 17, 18 with the first and last casing compartments (viz. compartments 7 and 11) defined by the casing end plates 2, 3 and those partitions (12 and 15) carrying the ends of the by-pass 24. In the oil cooler shown, oil to be cooled flows through the inlet 32 of the annular channel 30, through the casing inlet 17 in a sinuous path over the tubes to the casing outlet 18 and thence through the annular channel 31 to an outlet 33. On starting when the oil is cold and viscous, the valve 26 is opened due to the increased pressure and the oil flows from the casing compartment 7 through the centrally disposed by-pass direct to compartment 11 leading to channel 31 and to the outlet.. The apertures provided in the baffles may be so disposed that the liquid flows in a helical path over the tubes. Sealing rings are provided between the baffles and the casing a number of such seals being described,
