Abstract
648,409. Tubular heat-exchangers. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Feb. 4, 1948, No. 3317. [Class 64(iii)] A heat-exchanger in which one fluid flows from an inlet header to an outlet header through a plurality of tubes over which another fluid flows, comprises a chamber 10 having an inlet 11 and an outlet 12 for one fluid, a cover 13 for said chamber, a plate 20 forming one wall of the inlet and outlet header chambers 18, 19, spaced from the cover 13 by a downwardly directed flange 20c and forming a closed drain chamber 21, a plurality of U-shaped tubes 14 extending downwardly into the chamber 10 from one half of the plate 20, across the bottom of the chamber and upwardly to the other half of the plate 20, the tubes extending through the cover 13. A partition 16 and baffles 17 cause oil flowing through the chamber 10 to take a tortuous path over the tubes, through which a cooling fluid flows. Fluid leaking into the drain chamber between the joints of the cover 13 or the plate 20 and the tubes 14 is removed through the union 27. In a cooling system described, oil from the lubricating system of a gas turbine engine is cooled before being returned to the engine, the engine fuel constituting the cooling fluid flowing through the tubes of the heat-exchanger, Fluid leaking into the chamber 21 of the heat-exchanger is passed to the fuel injection system of the engine.
