Abstract
522,740. Lubricating systems for internal combustion engines. HURST, W. F. F. MARTIN-, and BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd. Dec. 14, 1938, No. 36472. [Class 12 (iii] [Also in Group XIII] In a lubricating system for internal combustion engines oil is supplied to a cooling vessel b through an annular chamber o which is fitted with baffle p partially surrounding the vessel b. When the engine is cold the pressure of the oil entering the chamber o by the pipe a is sufficient to move a spring-pressed plunger i in the discharge passage m to allow the oil to pass to the outlet d without passing through the vessel b: As the oil heats up it warms the oil in the vessel b and its pressure diminishes so that the plunger i closes the passage m. The oil is then forced to pass through ports q into the vessel b to reach the outlet d. The vessel b contains a number of small air tubes c and is fitted with baffles r to cause the oil to take a tortuous path. The air entering the tubes c is regulated by shutters e operated by a link and rocking arm-mechanism f, g by the rod h of the plunger i.
