Abstract

342,257. Cooling and silencing exhaust; heating charge. BICHLER, C. H., 21, Rue Baron, Paris. Oct. 26, 1929, No. 32606. Convention date, Oct. 27, 1928. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7(iii).] Each engine cylinder 1 has an exhaust pipe 2, provided with ribs 3 for strengthening and cooling, and prolonged by a ribbed nozzle 4 which discharges tangentially into an annular chamber formed between an outer casing 5 and an inner tubular member 6, the latter being open at both ends to permit of a flow of air therethrough. Opposite each nozzle, or pair of nozzles, 4 is a helicoidal baffle 11 the radial depth of which decreases towards the outlet end of the silencer which is provided with an outlet 14. The tube 6 may be perforated in the vicinity of each nozzle. A safety valve may be provided at 15. A free exhaust orifice may be provided for each pipe, the several orifices being controlled by valves actuated by a common device, and these orifices as well as the outlet 14 may be provided with a plurality of plates to prevent flame propagation. The flow of air over and through the silencer has a cooling effect thereon, and the air through the member 6 may be supplied to a carburetter. For engines with cylinders in star formation, the silencer would be in the form of a circle with the air inlet of the inner tube at the upper part of the crown.
