Abstract

254,280. Latham, J. A. June 24, 1925, [Convention date]. Exhaust silencers.-To regulate the flow of the exhaust from an internal-combustion engine a reservoir is used in addition to the exhaust manifold, the reservoir having a restricted outlet. As shown the reservoir 4 is connected to the manifold 2 through a pipe wherein is placed a spring-pressed valve 5; the exhaust holds this valve in a balanced position. The outlet from the reservoir is in the form of one or more nozzles 7, the issuing gases acting to draw exhaust gases through the outlet pipe 3 from the manifold; the outlet from the reservoir may be direct to the atmosphere. Valves may control the outlet orifices 7. The valve 5 may be replaced by baffles or the connecting pipe between the reservoir and manifold may be bent to act as a baffle. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) also states that the outlet could be in part through exhaust tubes from the manifold and in part direct to the atmosphere, and that the reservoir may collect some gases directly from the engine exhaust valves. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
