Exhaust, dealing with; charge, moistening.- Moist air is supplied by a pipe G<1> from the air space, above the level of the cooling water in the cylinder jacket or the radiator, through a non-return valve O<1> to the exhaust pipe E<1> to clean and cool the exhaust gas and to the induction pipe by a pipe S<1> to moisten the charge. The pipe G<1> enters a chamber K<1> in which water collects and from which it passes through an orifice t<1> in a pipe T provided with a non-return valve g<2> and leading to a heater h<2>. The non-return valve O<1> allows a certain amount of exhaust gas to pass to the heater which comprises a number of tubes r<1> fixed across a tube R' through which a mixture of exhaust gas, air and moisture passes by way of passages m<1>, P, p<2> and a non-return valve q<1> to the pipes s<1> leading to the induction pipe; extra air may be admitted by a bore, normally closed by a plug v<1>. The pipe G' may extend into the heater casing, a separate connection being provided between the heater casing and the chamber K<1>. The heater p<2> may have a separate connection with the exhaust pipe and an additional chamber may have, at the top, connections to the pipes G', P and a water-filling orifice which may be closed and at the bottom a pipe with orifices similar to the pipe T leading direct to the exhaust pipe; in the modification, the chamber K<1> may be omitted. The heater may be located in the exhaust manifold.
