Abstract
385,080. Extra-air admission valves. JERVIS, F., 8, West Avenue, Garden Village, Burnage, Manchester. Nov. 19, 1931, No. 32057. [Class 7 (ii).] A suction-actuated piston valve 12 is housed in a chamber 1 in the cylinder admission pipe and controls two sets of ports 20, 13 which are open to the atmosphere and to a hot air supply respectively. The suction acts on an enlarged head or diaphragm 17 carried by the piston valve 12, and the cold and hot air mix in the passage 18 and enter the admission pipe through an orifice 23. A corrugated baffle 27 rotates the incoming combustible mixture as it traverses the casing 2. In a modified construction, Fig. 3, the head 55 of the piston 42 restricts the mixture inlet during slow running. The cold-air inlet port 43 is regulated by a needle valve 45, and the air enters the valve at the same level as the hot air supply through the passage 39. The valve carries a spreader 54 and a grid 57 drives the combustible mixture into streams before it meets the air supplies. The hot air supply may be heated in a pipe coiled about the exhaust pipe, or be drawn from above the heated radiator water.
