Abstract

449,559. Spray carburetters. SWAN, A., and GRIFFITH, A. A., Royal Aircraft Establishment, South Farnborough, Hampshire. Jan. 15, 1935, No. 1326. [Class 7 (iii)] A pack or block of narrow or honeycomb-like air flow passages of the same cross-sectional area vaporizes fuel distributed by a nozzle or nozzles substantially uniformly to the entrances of the air passages. Fuel sprayed from a nozzle 5 mixes with air from an inlet 2, the fuel being substantially uniformly distributed in front of a pack 6 consisting of thin walled plates defining intervening passages which the mixture traverses to vaporize the fuel. In a modification, the pack is disposed between the carburetter and the engine and a circumferential recess in the induction pipe traps any liquid fuel which passes to a lower nozzle disposed in front of the pack. When applied to a centrifugal pump into which fuel is introduced centrally, the pack is arranged around the impeller 18, Fig. 2, with or without the interposition of perforated diffuser vanes 19. The pack may serve to prevent damage from backfiring. Specification 344,806 is referred to.
