Abstract

536,622. Spray carburetters. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Nov. 20, 1939, No. 30426. Convention date, Nov. 30, 1938. [Class 7 (iii)] Fuel is supplied under pressure to a nozzle 46 in the induction pipe in accordance with the fuel flow acting on a diaphragm 72 and the air flow acting on a diaphragm 70. Fuel is supplied by a pump 80 past a valve 76 which is adjusted by the diaphragms, the fuel passing through holes 77 in the valve to the chamber 68, and thence past a metering-orifice 87 to the chamber 67 at the other side of the diaphragm 72. Air pressure at the intake 18 is conveyed to chamber 65 by tubes 27, chamber 26 and pipe 28, while the pressure in a Venturi 20 is conveyed by a pipe 25 to chamber 66 at the other side of diaphragm 70. Fuel from chamber 67 flows through a pipe 53 to a valve 36, Fig. 2, in the nozzle 46, opening the valve by acting on a diaphragm 39. The fuel pressure then lifts a piston valve 45 to uncover one or more pairs of jets 47 arranged in the lee of the cross bar 30 supporting the nozzle. In a modification, the valve 36 is arranged axially at the end of the bar 30, which is provided with two sets of jets each controlled by piston valves. In another form, Fig. 5, the fuel nozzle 333 is arranged at one side of the induction pipe 10 and is controlled by a valve 336, which has an extension 337 passing through a Venturi 333A and formed with a serrated conical end 338, against which the fuel strikes and is mixed with air admitted through passages 394, 396, the fuel admitted at 353 opening the valve by acting on a diaphragm 339. The air inlet 396 may be connected to the outlet 13, Fig..1, of the supercharger 12, and the chamber 358 beneath the diaphragm 339, instead of being connected to atmosphere at 361, may be connected to the Venturi 20. In another form, Fig. 8, the valve 436 controls the flow of fuel to a passage 410 formed in a cross bar 408 in the induction pipe 400, a further valve 466 controlling the flow to a pipe 402 extending across the induction pipe and formed with several jet orifices along the sides and beneath. A continuously-open byepass 472 also leads to the pipe 402, while another byepass 462 is always open for idling.
