Abstract
1330200 Spray carburetters P AUGUST 1 Dec 1971 55784/71 Heading F1B A fuel supply device for I. C. engines in which fuel is supplied through a jet or jets controlled by a needle valve or valves characterized in that the said jet or jets are in an injection nozzle arranged in an induction manifold and further ports are provided which come into operation as the fuel feed increases so that when idling with low fuel pressure the flow through the jet 12 is diminished and the jet(s) open with increasing fuel pressure, the further ports coming into operation as the fuel pressure is raised to increase the engine speed. Fuel from an engine driven pump is supplied to a nozzle chamber 21 and acts on a piston 15 to which is attached a needle 14, withdrawing the needle from a jet 12. The fuel which issues from the jet strikes a concave baffle plate 16 and breaks up into a fine spray, the droplets of which are entrained in the combustion air and carried to the cylinders. Condensation on the walls of the inlet manifold is thus minimised. As the engine speed increases more fuel is supplied by the pump, the pressure in chamber 21 increases and piston 15 rises further to uncover ports 13. Fuel issuing from these points strike baffle plates 22 and is broken up into spray. The flow of air into the induction pipe 1 is controlled by a valve consisting of two over lapping sliding plates 19a and 19b. Each plate has a semi-circular notch 20, the notches co-operating to form a roughly oval hole. At idling speed, the air is led to an annular cavity 3 surrounding the jet. As the valve is opened further, air flows through a tube 18 surrounding the nozzle chamber. At full throttle air also flows along the annular space between the tube 18 and the induction pipe.
