Abstract

694,387. Spray carburetters. GIANINI, C. March 1, 1951 [March 9, 1950], No. 5007/51. Class 7 (iii). A continuous stream of fuel under pressure flowing from a jet through the intake pipe or a chamber in communication therewith is intermittently atomized by the impingement thereon of a blast of air timed in phase with the opening of the intake valve. An engine-driven pump 9, Fig. 1. delivers fuel from a float chamber 11 through. a pipe 25 to a jet 8 situated in a carburetter mixing passage 2 adjacent the intake port 1, the stream of fuel being collected in a tube 10 and returned to the chamber 11. When the valve 30 opens, the ports 5 of a rotary compressed air distributer 4 open a passage 6 and a jet of air impinges on and atomizes the fuel stream at the point between the jet 8 and tube 10. The delivery of the pump 9 is controlled by a capsule 15 actuated by the suction downstream of the throttle valve 3 and connected to a needle valve 21 controlling a by-pass 26 returning fuel to the tank 11, the flow through the by-pass increasing with increasing suction. In a multicylin, der engine each cylinder intake passage is provided with a separate fuel jet 8 and air blast means 4 and in a modification the fuel from the tube 10 is returned to the fuel tank by a second pump. The function of the air blast valve 4 may be performed by the engine valve mechanism. In an engine such as a radial engine, Fig. 3, having intake passages parallel to the cylinder axes, the passage 28 for receiving the stream of fuel from the jet 29 can be incorporated in the wall of the intake pipe.
