Abstract
728,535. Spray carburetters. BENVENUTI, O. Feb. 5, 1953 [Feb. 12, 1952 ; Nov. 27, 1952], No. 3265/53. Class 7(3). A carburetter comprises at least one mixing chamber 30, Fig. 4, into which the fuel-air mixture is fed by a pipe 31 which extends longitudinally of the chamber, the inner end of the pipe 31 being disposed opposite the bottom wall of the chamber 30 so that the fuel air mixture is projected against said wall and thereby subjected to a rapid change of direction in passing into the chamber 30 which is adapted to impart turbulence to the mixture and which is provided with apertures for the outlet of the mixture to a passage leading to the inlet manifold. The pipe 31 is provided with openings 32 at its lower end and the chamber 30 is provided with a baffle 33 to break up fuel droplets in the mixture. The upper part 29 of the chamber 30 is provided with orifices or slots through which the mixture flows into a space 25 communicating with the carburetter outlet 26, and spring- loaded valves 37 prevent damage on backfiring. The fuel is supplied through a pipe 36 to an annular chamber formed around the top of the pipe 31 and communicating with a spraying orifice 35. An orifice may be provided in the lower wall of the chamber 30 to permit fuel collecting therein to be sucked into the outlet 27. A modification, Fig. 1, comprises a number of mixing units 1 connected to a main air intake pipe 5 and grouped around the carburetter outlet pipe 2. Each unit comprises an intake conduit 8, from which a fuel-air mixture formed therein flows through serrations 9 at the end thereof into a chamber 1a containing a circular perforated mixing baffle 13a and a conical baffle 14 through orifices 15 in which the mixture flows to openings 16 leading to the outlet pipe 2. The fuel is supplied through individual pipes 12 to each unit under the control of a valve 19 connected with the throttle valve 3. In a further modification the pipe 8, Fig. 1, is not in contact with the bottom of its surrounding chamber and the serrations 9 are replaced by narrow slots communicating with grooves formed in the outer wall of the pipe 8.
