780,529. Cooling pistons. SULZER FRERES, SOC. ANON. May 9, 1955 [May 14, 1954], No. 13408/55. Class 122 (1). A liquid cooled piston 1 includes an insert 5 fitted in the piston and forming therewith adjacent the rim of the piston crown 4 an annular space 10 partitioned by a detachable element, such as a bolt 12, interposed between inlet and outlet openings to and from the space for the coolant. The insert 5 forms a spiral path 7 with the crown 4 and includes a central pipe 6 which extends through the hollow pistonrod 8 that is secured, with the insert, to the piston. The coolant, for example oil, is supplied through the duct 14 between the rod 8 and pipe 6 and passes through an aperture 15, space 16 and a recess 17 into the space 10 through which it flows, in the direction indicated by arrow 18, until deflected by the bolt 18 into the spiral path 7, being finally discharged through the pipe 6. The bolt 12 may be screwed to the piston instead of to the insert as shown.
