A water-cooled cylinder liner 1 comprises at its upper end an outer wall 1<SP>1</SP> seating on the crankcase wall 2 and forming a cooling space 6 and, in the region of the inlet and outlet ports 3, 4, a reinforcing ring 5, the wall 1<SP>1</SP> being separated from the ring 5. The cooling chamber 6 is connected to the lower cooling space 6<SP>1</SP> through passages 10 in the ring 5.
