Abstract
538,678. Radiators for aircraft engines &c. CLARKE ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., H. B., and DANIELSON, P. J. Dec. 11, 1939, No. 31996. [Class 64 (iii)] In an oil-cooling system for internal combustion engines, the oil pressure at starting opens a spring-pressed lift valve 15 on the inlet chainber 10 to allow the oil to return through a pipe 51 to the oil tank, and at the same time maintains a sliding sleeve valve 20, controlling the oil flow to a cooler through a pipe 52; on its seating 24. Oil enters the sleeve valve through an opening 27 and a small quantity leaks continuously through capillary passages 35 and ducts 37 into the return pipe 51. The resistance to flow through the passages becomes less as the viscosity of the oil falls, and the consequent decrease of pressure in the valve allows it to open against the action of a spring 23. The oil pressure so acts on the piston 39 of a servomotor operating the shutters of the cooler that as the pressure falls, the shutters are opened to increase the flow of cooling air. Specification 432,048, [Group XXXIV], is referred to.
