[Class 64 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIX] In valve apparatus for controlling the oil flow and the shutters of an air-cooled oil cooler, a piston 5 is acted upon by the oil pressure to allow oil to flow from the inlet' 2 through a passage 6 and the inlet 9 to the cooler byepass and at the same time move the levers operating the shutters. A sleeve valve 10 controlling the outlet 12 to the cooler is controlled by a thermostat 23 operating under normal increase of temperature and by a thermostat 24 set to operate at the highest safety temperature. The oil pressure first moves the piston 5 against a spring 21 to close the shutters and then upon further movement against a spring 17 the piston opens the passage 6 to the byepass. When the oil is heated to a certain predetermined temperature, the sleeve valve 10 is moved against a spring 30 by the thermostat 23 to uncover the inlet part 12 to the cooler, and the consequent fall in pressure allows the piston 5 to return and close the byepass and open the shutters. To prevent the diversion of the oil to the byepass due to high oil pressure set up by " coring," the end of the sleeve valve 10 is formed to close the byepass port at high oil temperatures. The shutters may be operated through a hydraulic relay.
