Abstract
497,092. Valves. STONE, W. A., and ROBERTSON COOLERS, Ltd. June 14, 1937, No. 16456. [Class 135] [Also in Group XIII] In an oil cooling system for aircraft &c. engines comprising air-cooled units A, B, C connected in series between an inlet pipe I from the engine and an outlet pipe O<1> to the storage tank, the units B, C are provided with byepass valves E, F respectively, responsive to the pressure at inlet to the preceding unit and controlling the flow through pipes E<1>, F<1> to the outlet pipe. The inlet to the unit B, e.g. is connected by a pipe d to the casing of the valve E and the flow therethrough to the pipe E<1> is regulated by a valve member exposed, through a pipe C, to the oil pressure at inlet to the unit A. Each of the valves may consist of a member j, Fig. 2, held against the end of the pipe d by a spring, the pressure of which is regulated by a piston g loaded on one side by a spring h and the pressure of the oil flowing to the unit with which the valve is associated, and on the other side to the oil pressure at inlet to the preceding unit. A main byepass valve V may be provided on a pipe P. In a modification, in which the main valve and the valve E are combined in a single unit, the piston g slides in an extension g<1>, Fig. 3, of the main valve disc m, and both the piston and the disc are exposed through a port n to the pressure of the oil entering the first unit of the cooler. The oil passing the disc flows through a port n<1> to the storage tank, while that byepassing the second cooling unit flows from a passage O communicating through a port n, with the inlet of said unit through a passage O<1> to the port n<1>.
