Abstract
726,934. Cooling-radiators for engine oil. GARRETT CORPORATION. June 24, 1952, No. 15863/52. Class 64 (3). A viscosity regulator for congealable fluid under varying temperature and pressure (e.g. engine oil) comprises a heat-exchanger with inlet and outlet connections for the fluid, and temperature and pressure responsive valved control mechanism including a tubular housing, removably mounted within the heat-exchanger and operatively associated with the inlet and outlet connections such that the flow of congealable fluid therebetween is automatically and selectively directed either wholly through the heat-exchanger, a part only of the heatexchanger or through said tubular housing, thus by-passing the heat-exchanger. The heatexchanging portion of the regulator shown includes a core comprising a bundle of tubes 11 through which air or other coolant fluid is passed, surrounded by a shell 10 and extending between the tube plates 12. The control mechanism is disposed within a tubular housing 21 removably mounted within the shell 10 of the heat-exchanger. Baffles 13, 14 within the shell divide the space therein into four sections forming a tortuous path for the oil, the flow path through the cooler being either through all the sections or only two sections (i.e. on one side only of the transverse baffle 14). Oil, when hot, flows from inlet port 18 to chamber 24, Fig. 3, past surge check valve 25 which is normally held open by a spring 40, to core inlet passage 26 and thence through all the sections of the core (see arrows : Fig. 2) to the space 33 where the oil pressure actuates the core outlet check valve 32 to allow the cooled oil to flow to the outlet 19. If the oil leaving the cooler becomes too cool a thermostat 30 in the oil outlet passage 31 operates to open a by-pass valve 28 so that at least some of the inflowing oil may then pass from the passage 26 directly to a second core inlet passage 29 by way of by-pass passage 27 whereby a portion of the core is cut out of the oil path. As the oil temperature rises, the thermostatic element 30 operates gradually to close the by-pass valve 28 so eventually directing the whole of the inflowing oil to the passage 26 and thence through each section of the core to the outlet 19. In the event of a sudden increase in oil pressure, bypass valve 28 which is axially displaceable on stem 43 may be forced open to allow some oil to flow more directly to the outlet. In the event or a sudden pressure surge of even greater intensity, a valve 23 adjacent the inlet 18 will be forced open against the action of spring 40 thus allowing oil to flow directly to the outlet 19 by way of passages 36. The operating temperature of the element 30 may be varied by adjusting screw 35.
