Abstract

446,914. Exhaust-silencers. GRIFFITH, A. A., and HELMORE, W., Royal Aircraft Establishment, South Farnborough, Hampshire. Nov. 9, 1934, No. 32257. [Class 7 (ii)] Two or more manuallyoperable butterfly or other valves spaced apart in series and coupled together so as to move in phase with one another are employed in the exhaust system of an internal - combustion engine for controlling the flow of the exhaust gases, sound leaking past the valve nearest the engine being damped down in the space between that and the second valve. Loose-fitting butterfly valves 7, 8, arranged in a byepass pipe 5 associated with a silencer 2 communicating with an exhaust pipe 1, are controlled simultaneously from a hand-lever 12 which may be coupled to the engine throttle lever.
