Abstract

327,791. Guy, S. S. Feb. 1, 1929. Heating and cooling lubricant.-In a lubricating system for internal-combustion engines provided with both heating and cooling devices, the arrangement being such that for starting purposes the heating device is made active and the cooling device short-circuited, while for normal running the heating device is rendered inactive and the cooling device brought into operation, the cooling device comprises an oil radiator incorporated in the construction of the engine water radiator. Oil drawn from the bearings and sump by a pump d is forced by a pump d<1> to a tank c, whence it passes to the bearings through a coiled pipe e enclosed in a heating chamber f. The supply of heat to the chamber f, which is derived from the engine exhaust gases or circulating water, is controlled by a valve g. A valve h controls alternative paths for the oil from the pump d<1> to the tank c, one path c<1> leading direct to the tank while the other j leads through the oil radiator i. The two valves are interconnected in such a way that when the valve g is closed the oil is caused to pass through the radiator, and are operated either by hand or by a thermostat.
