Abstract

407,790. Valves. STANLEY, F. R., 1A, Salford Road, Streatham Hill, and WORTH, C. A., 8, Pensitone Road, Streatham, both in London. Dec. 12, 1932, No. 35244. [Class 135.] An initial charge of lubricating oil is supplied to the cylinders of an internal-combustion engine when the latter is in a cold condition by a device controlled in its action by the temperature of the main or of an auxiliary supply of oil, or, by the temperature of the cooling water; when the engine warms up the oil supply is cut off. As shown, a valve member 15 is carried by the free end of a bi-metallic strip 13 supported in a member 4 having oil inlet and outlet passages 20, 19, respectively. The member 4 is secured to the oil sump casing 6 so that the tubular part 7 surrounding the strip 13 is immersed in oil. The valve 15 has squared portions 17, 18, guided in the passages 19, 20. The outlet passage 19, which is adjustably controlled by a screw 21, leads directly to the engine cylinder or to the engine induction pipe. When the engine is cold oil passes through the outlet 19 to the engine cylinders. As the oil warms the valve closes gradually and when a predetermined temperature of oil is obtained the outlet passage 19 is completely shut off.
