Abstract

556,766. Heat-exchange apparatus. MORRIS MOTORS, Ltd., DONO, G. E., and GODDARD, R. H. April 18, 1942, No. 5186. [Class 64 (iii)] In a heat-exchange apparatus, such as an oil or other liquid cooler associated with a road-vehicle or aircraft internal-combustion engine, of the type comprising a series of thin-walled tubes a of elongated or flattened form in cross-section, each of which contains a thin sheet-metal web for strengthening and for increasing the rate of heat transfer from the tube, each sheet-metal web b has formed on it a number of lateral projections d adapted to exert a scrubbing action on the fluid flowing through the tubes. As shown, the web b is of corrugated form providing a series of channels e for the fluid flow and the projections d are constituted by the turned-up flanges of holes c punched out of the web b. The tubes a are provided with gills and connected between headers in the usual manner.
