Abstract
675,072. Cooling - radiators. UNITED AIRCRAFT PRODUCTS, Inc. July 11, 1950, No. 17374/50. Class 64(iii). A heat-exchanger, e.g. an oil cooler, comprises a shell 10 in which is mounted a core unit comprising an assembly of closely spaced tubes 24, one fluid (e.g. oil), flowing over the tubes and a second fluid (e.g. air) flowing through the tubes, a longitudinal chamber 28 being provided within the core having flow tubes 29 leading therefrom to the tube assembly and the shell having openings therein leading respectively into the longitudinal chamber and into said tube assembly for the circulation of the first mentioned fluid through the core unit. In the form shown, oil enters the chamber 28 through an inlet 12 in the shell and flows downwardly through the tubes 29 to a chamber 26 at the lower end of the shell and then through an opening 30 in the lower baffle to the space within the shell whence it is directed by baffle plates 25 in a tortuous path around the tubes 24 to an outlet 14 in the shell. At starting, when the oil is viscous a valve (not shown) in a further outlet opening 13 in the shell is opened and the oil instead of flowing around the tubes to the outlet 14, flows directly from the inlet 12 to the outlet 13. The chamber 28 is supported at its ends in recesses formed in tube plates 22. The sealing between the tubes 24 and the tube plates and between the tube plates and the shell may be of the kind described in Specification 665,133. Some of the tubes 24 may pass longitudinally through the chamber 28. The fluid control valve, &c. (not shown) may be mounted in the chamber 28 in which case those tubes 24 passing therethrough are omitted.
