Abstract

962,619. Hot-water boilers. G. OSPELT. April 29, 1963 [May 12, 1962; Dec. 5, 1962], No. 16825/63. Heading F4A. A hot-water boiler comprises a horizontally-disposed, cylindrical, inner water jacket enclosing a combustion chamber eccentrically mounted within an outer jacket or jackets, a longitudinal opening in the inner jacket leading gases from the chamber into the widest part of the annulus between the jackets whilst a gas discharge opening from the annulus to a stack or to the widest part of the next annulus is located at or beyond the narrowest part of the annulus whereby the velocity of the gases as they cool is maintained. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the boiler consists of an inner jacket 1 enclosing a combustion chamber 8 fired by an oil or gas burner 9. The jacket 1 is eccentrically mounted in an outer jacket 4, the jackets being connected to a common water space at the rear of the boiler. Gases from the chamber 8 discharge through an opening 12 into the widest part of the annulus 13 between the jackets 1, 4, and divided for flow through the narrowing space in which turbulence-producing fins 17 are provided, to a passage 15 whence they flow to an outlet 14. The boiler has flow and return connections 10, 11 to a heating system. For hot water supply an indirect heater 21 is disposed above the boiler and contains a coil 20 into which water from the inner jacket flows through a double-walled pipe 25 which also serves to return the water to the outer jacket. The heater has inlet and supply connections 22, 23. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the outlet from the inner jacket is disposed adjacent the discharge opening from the outer jacket and the gases travel in one direction around the annulus. In a further modification, Fig. 6, three jackets 101 107, 111 are provided, baffles 129, 131 being located adjacent the outlets 127, 128 from the inner jackets so that the gases are constrained to flow serially about both jackets through narrowing spaces before reaching the outlet 130 of the outer jacket.
