In a hot-water boiler comprising an inner and an outer water jacket surrounding a combustion chamber, the inner jacket is arranged eccentrically within the outer jacket so that gases flow from the combustion chamber through an aperture into a continuously-narrowing annular flue to discharge through a diametricallyplaced outlet, whereby a substantially constant rate of heat transfer is maintained throughout their passage through the annular flue. In the form shown, the boiler has an inner water jacket 4 mounted eccentrically within an outer jacket 7. The inner jacket encloses a combustion chamber 3 which is downwardlyfired by a burner 14 or which may be fired with solid fuel on a grate 29. Combustion gases flow through an aperture 26 into the widest part of the annular passage between the water jackets and flow over baffles 28 in both directions around the inner jacket at increasing velocity as the passage narrows to a lateral outlet 27. Flow and return connections 24, 23 connect the boiler to a central heating system. A hot-water supply heater is mounted above the water jackets and is heated by circulation of the primary water upwardly through a jacket 15 enclosing the combustion air tube 12, through an upper space 21 and downwardly through tubes 20. The supply heater has a cold water inlet 18 and a hot water outlet 17.
