Abstract
1,021,298. Multitubular steam or hot-water boilers. LINDHOLMENS VARV A.B. Oct. 17, 1963 [Oct. 20, 1962], No. 41105/63. Heading F4A. A steam or hot-water boiler heated by exhaust gas from an I.C. engine and which may also be fired by an auxiliary oil burner when exhaust gas is not available or insufficient in quantity comprises a set of tubes for conveying the exhaust gas and another set for the furnace gases, the two sets extending substantially perpendicularly to each other through the same part of the water space within the boiler shell so that they cross each other whereby thermal stresses in the shell and tubes when only one set is in use are minimized. In the form shown the boiler consists of an upright cylindrical shell 1 containing two spaced banks 2a, 2b of vertical tubes 2 extending between tube plates 3, 4. I.C. engine exhaust gases flow through the tubes 2 from an inlet 5 to an outlet 6 or may flow serially through the spaced banks. In the space between the banks 2a, 2b is located a bank 8 of horizontal tubes extending between a wetback furnace chamber 10 and the opposed curved surface of the shell. An oil burner inserted at 11 fires the furnace, the gases flowing through the tubes of the bank 8 to an outlet chamber 12. The shell is surmounted by a steam dome 15.
