829,434. Return tube steam boilers. ROBEY & CO. Ltd., and PERRY, F. B. Dec. 3, 1957 [Dec. 10, 1956], No. 37605/56. Class 123(2) In a return tube steam boiler having a cylindrical shell 1 with end plates 2, 3, a furnace flue 4 discharges hot gases into a wet-back combustion chamber 5 whence first-pass return tubes 15 convey the gases to front smoke box 14 and second pass tubes 16 conduct the gases from the smoke box to a chimney outlet box 17. The combustion chamber is formed by a flat plate 7 secured to the end of the flue 4 and having its upper and lower edges welded or riveted to a semi-cylindrical plate 8, the ends of the chamber thus formed being closed by curved plates 10. In a modification, two flues discharge into the chamber 5, the first pass tubes 15 being disposed between the flues. In another modification, a single flue is located near the bottom of the shell with the first pass tubes grouped on each side, the second pass tubes being disposed above the flue.
