763,867. Water heaters. FLAVEL & CO., Ltd., S. Oct. 21, 1955 [Oct. 6, 1954], No. 28749/54. Class 64(1) In a balanced-flue water heater, the water flows in a thin film downwardly over the outer surface or surfaces of a heat exchanger 24, 25 mounted within a closed casing 10, 32, and the whole of the combustion air is brought from outside into the lower part of the casing and fed into the lower end of the heat exchanger through and around a gas burner 19 or burners below the heat exchanger. The hot combustion gases pass upwardly through the latter and are discharged from the casing through a rearwardly extending flue 33. This flue may be above and parallel to or, as shown, may extend through the air inlet 14. A vertical passage 12 leading from the inlet 14 has an outlet 15. The heat exchanger comprises an inner frusto-conical shell 24 and an outer corrugated cylindrical shell 25 having openings 28, 29 with raised lips to prevent the entry of water. The heat exchanger is surrounded by an inner casing comprising a shell 17 and an upper flanged plate 16. A lower flanged plate 18 supports the burner 19, valve 20, and water inlet and outlet pipes. A modified heater has two heat exchangers each with its own burner.
