816,743. Hot-water boilers. VAPOR HEATING CORPORATION. May 27, 1957 [Dec. 14, 1956], No. 16775/57. Class 64(1) A fuel oil pipe 32 to a burner nozzle 33 passes through a combustion-air tube 31 to a closed combustion chamber 43, the shell 11 of which is surrounded by a doublewalled shell 10 containing insulation 22. Liquid to be heated passes from an inlet 62 through a jacket space 58 between the shells 10, 11, then into hollow elements 47, Fig. 3, between which parallel-sided flue passages 44 are formed, and passes finally to an outlet 63. The flue gases pass out through a chimney 34. Each element 47 is open only at its longest edge where its hollow interior 45 communicates with the jacket 58 and each is formed by joining two plates 49, of general trapezium shape, Fig. 1, and with dimples 55, by seam welding together edge-flanges 52, Fig. 3, at the three shorter edges of each plate. A top frusto-conical space 64 and a similar bottom space are formed within the ring of hollow elements 47 as indicated in Fig. 1. The non-parallel edges of the dimpled plates 49 are formed with small walls 50, Fig. 3 of elongated triangular form as indicated in Fig. 3, so that there is a divergence of each element's main walls towards the jacket 58. Protuberances 56 formed externally of each element 47 by the dimples 55 and elongated protuberances 59 formed by trough depressions nearest the air tube 31 are in contact with the similar protrusions of each adjacent element. The heater is used vertically or horizontally and may be portable or used in buses or rail cars.
