Abstract

911,393. Waste heat steam boilers. VORKAUF, H. July 14, 1960 [Aug. 13, 1959], No. 24588/60. Class 123 (2). A steam boiler for utilizing the heat of diesel exhaust gases and having auxiliary heating means which is operated to maintain steam output if the exhaust gas flow stops or is insufficient to meet the steam demand comprises a water tube boiler having a large drum 1 in the water space of which are arranged smoke tubes 2 through which the exhaust gases flow from an inlet 3 to an outlet 4. The drum is mounted on and supported by a frame constituted by unheated downcomers 5 interconnected by distributing headers 6 .. 8 and collecting headers 9, 10. The distributing and collecting headers are connected by riser tubes 11 ... 13 which form the walls of a furnace which is fired by an oil burner 15. Steam which separates in the collecting headers flows into the drum 1 to mix with the steam generated by the smoke tubes. In a modification the drum 1 is mounted vertically.
