841,444. Heating steam boilers by waste gases. GOTAVERKEN A. B. March 6, 1958 [June 17, 1957], No. 7328/58. Class 123(2) [Also in Group XXVII] A combined steam boiler and silencer located in the exhaust gas system of an I.C. engine consists of a vertically mounted, double-walled, cylindrical vessel having an inner silencer chamber 4 surrounded by an annular heat-exchange chamber 3 in which is disposed a number of vertical, serially-connected steam generating tubes 5. An inlet and outlet pipe 6 extends vertically through the chamber 3 and is divided internally by a sloping partition 7. Exhaust gas enters the bottom of the pipe 6 and flows into the chamber 3 through a side opening 8 in the pipe. A pivoted valve 10 proportions the gas flow between the chamber 3 and a by-pass 11 through which gas may flow directly into the silencer chamber. Gas flowing around the chamber 3 heats the tubes 5 to generate steam and enters the pipe 6 through an opening 9, the gas discharging from the unit through the outlet at the top of the pipe. Gas entering the chamber 11 is directed tangentially through a screen 12 which arrests the larger entrained solid particles into the chamber 4 in which smaller particles are cooled and separated by contact with the wall 2 of the chamber. This gas flows from the chamber 4 into the outlet end of the pipe 6 through an opening 13 therein. The considerable expansion of the gas which occurs as it enters the chamber 4 and the fact that this chamber is enclosed by the chamber 3 which is covered with a heat insulation material ensures efficient silencing.
