Abstract

682,410. Air-heating furnaces; steam superheaters. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Jan. 23, 1951 [Feb. 24, 1950], No. 4867/50. Classes 64 (i) and 123 (iii) [Also in Group XXVI] A combustion chamber for burning fuel in the exhaust gases of a piston type reciprocating engine to heat the compressed air of a gas turbine plant or to superheat steam from a boiler or both comprises a steel shell lined in the lower portion with refractory material 18 to form a combustion space and in the upper portion with heatinsulating material 19, the inner wall of which is protected against high temperature by a coil of tubing 20 through which the steam or air is passed. The steam or air passes through an inlet header 22, the tubing 20 and intermediate header 23 to a conduit 24 which leads to a tube 25 extending to a lower header 26. This header is connected by a nest of tubes 27 to an outlet header 28. The tube 25 is allowed to slide within the header 28 to allow for expansion. The exhaust gases from an internal-combustion engine enter the combustion chamber through a conduit 30 and fuel is fed into this chamber through a pipe 31. If desired, separate heaters for the steam and air may be arranged in one combustion chamber. The shells are preferably covered with heat-insulating material and an outer casing may be provided to collect and lead away any gas which leaks through the joints in the shell structure. The temperature of the outgoing steam or air may be controlled by varying the amount of fuel fed through the pipe 31.
