Abstract
1,077,446. Exhaust gas purifiers. WALKER MANUFACTURING CO. Aug.20, 1964 [Aug. 22, 1963; Feb.28, 1964], No. 34151/64. Heading F1B. In an exhaust gas purifier having concentric tubes 11, 9, 3, Fig.1 forming an inlet pipe 11, catalyst chamber 71, and outlet chamber 73, a portion of the tube 9 is unperforated and the space adjacent thereto forms a catalyst reservoir replenishing the bed 71 as the catalyst therein is consumed. The purifier is normally mounted with its axis vertical and the exhaust gases which enter through pipe 105 into the perforated tube 11, flow through the annular catalyst bed 71 to outlet chamber 73 leading to outlet pipe 129. The inner tube 11 is supported by perforated partitions 45, 47 in which it is slidable to permit expansion. In a modification, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown) adapted to be mounted horizontally, the gases enter through pipes (272), (274), into chamber (308) and flow through pipe (284) into chamber (312) from which they flow through catalyst bed (314) into outlet space (310) and thence through outlet pipe (276). The tubes 270, 218, surrounding the catalyst bed are provided with louvres 318 over a portion only of their circumference so that the gases do not flow through port 316 of the bed which in practice is situated at the top of the device and forms the catalyst reservoir for the active part 314 of the bed.
