Abstract

1,049,260. Treating exhaust gases. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. Sept. 8, 1965 [Sept. 22, 1964], No. 38413/65. Heading F1B. In a catalytic exhaust purifying device in which the gases flow radially through a catalyst bed 17 contained between inner and outer perforated tubes 16, 11, the upper portion 13 of the tube 11 is unperforated to prevent direct upward flow through this portion. The end plates 23 closing the ends of the tubes 11, 16, may be yieldably supported and controlled by a thermally responsive device to open to by-pass the catalyst bed at very high temperatures. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the outer casing 10 is elliptical and the upper portion 29 of inner tube 14 is unperforated.
