Abstract
919,667. Purifying and silencing exhaust. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. July 14, 1961 [July 22, 1960; April 3, 1961], No. 25560/61. Class 7(2) A catalytic muffler comprises a housing 1, Fig. 1, having a coaxial tube 4 which is perforated intermediate its ends, a coaxial sleeve 12 having a cross-section intermediate in size between those of the tube 4 and the housing 1, space 13 containing a catalyst and a space outside the sleeve through which the catalytically-oxidized exhaust gases are carried to outlet 5. The housing, tube and sleeve may be cylindrical or elliptical. Exhaust gases passing through Venturi 8 draw in ambient air from opening 11 and pass through member 10 and radially outwardly through perforations 7, catalyst bed 13 and sleeve 12 and thence to the outlet 5. The catalyst is maintained free of voids by means of a plate 25 acted on by springs 24 positioned in refractory wool 25a, which compresses the catalyst against a fixed or spring-loaded plate 17. The exit end plate 3 is removable to facilitate replenishment of the catalyst bed. If the oxidized exhaust gas temperature exceeds a predetermined value, a loop 32 melts permitting coiled and looped portions of wire 30 to stretch under the pressure of exhaust gases impinging on hinged cap 29 which is thus opened to permit raw exhaust gas to pass directly to the outlet 5. In another embodiment, part of the exhaust gases are arranged to by-pass the Venturi 234, Fig. 5, through a pressure or thermally responsive valve 244, and in a modification the spring 246 is arranged in the ambient air passage 239. A fusion cap 259 permits exit of gases without oxidation at excess temperatures. In a further embodiment the Venturi 133, Fig. 4, by-pass conduit 130 and valve 124 are arranged before a separate catalytic muffler 112. The valve stem 126 is positioned in a polyamide or polyfluorohydrocarbon bearing 127. Catalysts. An iron oxide-chromium oxide prepared from 85-97% of Fe 2 O 3 and 0À5-15 % of Cr 2 O 3 may be used.
