Abstract

946,164. Purifying exhaust gases. CALUMET & HECLA Inc. Nov. 23, 1961 [Jan.16, 1961), No. 41967/61. Heading F1B. An exhaust gas purifier comprises primary and secondary beds 24, 40, of catalytic material, the secondary bed 40 being heated quickly to its operative temperature at starting by an electric heating coil 46. Air is mixed with the exhaust gases and a by-pass valve 50 may be opened when the primary bed 24 reaches its operative temperature to by-pass the exhaust gases leaving the primary bed straight to atmosphere, the heating coil 46 being simultaneously rendered inoperative. In a modification the primary and secondary beds are arranged in a single casing of which the downstream end is surrounded by the coil 46. The catalyst may be manganese and copper oxides on a carrier of alumina.
