Abstract

1373826 Purifying exhaust gases NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 3 Jan 1972 [9 Aug 1971] 105/72 Heading F1B To detect deterioration of the catalyst, e.g. oxidation catalyst, in a catalytic converter for treating motor vehicle exhaust gases a thermocouple 18 has junctions 16a, 16b formed by two wires 20a, 20b, e.g. chromel and alumel or iron and constantan, respectively, positioned within the converter inlet 12a and outlet 12b. An ammeter 26 or a relay with a coil connected in series with a diode and having contacts in an indicator lamp circuit is connected to the wire 20b to indicate the E. M. F. of the thermocouple or energize the lamp when the E. M. F. exceeds a certain value. The E. M. F. is a function of the temperature difference across the reactor which is positive when the catalyst is fully active and negative when inactive. The junctions 16a, 16b may be located in a stainless-steel tube packed with an insulating material.
