Abstract

1385331 Purifying exhaust gases NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 26 Jan 1972 [20 July 1971] 3664/72 Heading F1B [Also in Division H1] A catalytic reactor 12 in a motor vehicle exhaust system has an air pipe 16 extending through the catalyst bed 10 and a temperature detector 30 which produces an electrical signal when the temperature of pressurized air leaving the air pipe exceeds a pre-selected value. The air is supplied to the pipe 16 by a secondary air source 20. The detector 30 may comprise a bimetallic strip 32 which abuts an adjustable contact 38 to complete an electrical circuit when the air temperature in the chamber 26, bearing a relationship to the catalyst bed temperature, exceeds the pre-selected value. The detector (40), Fig. 2 (not shown) may comprise a rod (44) movable axially against spring bias by a temperature detecting portion (42). The detector 30 may energize a solenoid valve 52, Fig. 4, to change the connection of diaphragm chamber 64 to the intake manifold to connection with the atmosphere. The spring-biased diaphragm then moves a valve member 72 to divert the exhaust gases through a reactor by-pass pipe 174.
