Abstract

The exhaust gases from the engine (3) pass through the exhaust pipe (4) into the catalytic chambers (7a) and (7b). If the exhaust gas temperature is too high there is a risk of permanent damage to the chambers (7a) and (7b). To avoid this danger, a sensor (25) is fitted to the exhaust pipe and senses an excess of oxygen which occurs when the exhaust gas temperature is above normal. The signal from the sensor (25) is used to operate the servo valve (19) which in turn reduces the pressure under the piston (13) of the valve (14) so that it opens the valve seat (11) in the bypass line (8) and closes the valve seat (10) leading to the catalytic chambers (7a) and (7b).
