Abstract

PURPOSE: To minimize production of smoke and to thereby reduce the amount of NOx contained in the exhaust gas of a diesel engine, through combined use of an EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system and an injection-timing delaying system which are controlled by an electric control system.
CONSTITUTION: An EGR valve 5 is provided in EGR passage 4 which is extended between intake pipe 2 and exhaust pipe 3 of engine 1. Various sensors 6 for detecting the engine condition detect, for instance, the engine speed, load water temperature and negative pressure in the intake pipe and afford the output signals to controller 7, which in turn calculates the output signals and produces a signal. The output signal of controller 7 is used, on the one hand, to set actuator 8 into operation for starting timer 10 for injection pump 9 and on the other hand to set actuator 11 into operation for opening or closing the EGR valve 5. By thus combining the EGR system and injection-timing delaying system effectively, it is enabled to reduce the amount of NOx contained in the exhaust gas.
