Abstract

PURPOSE: To fulfill a prescribed purifying function, by providing a second exhaust passage which extends downstream to an exhaust manifold and is connected to a catalyst passage and by providing a control valve in the second exhaust passage so that the valve is open when the temperature of an engine is low.
CONSTITUTION: A second exhaust passage 6 is branched downstream to an exhaust manifold 2 so that the second exhaust passage is connected to a catalystic unit 4 in parallel with an exhaust passage 5. A control valve 7, which is open when the temperature of an engine 1 is low, is provided in the second exhaust passage 6. When the temperature of the engine 1 is low, the exhaust gas in the manifold 2 is almost all conducted to the catalytic unit 4 through the second exhaust passage 6 because the control valve 7 is open. For that reason, even if the temperature of the exhaust gas is low, the catalytic unit 4 is not cooled due to a turbocharger 3 but activated to perform prescribed purifying action.
