Abstract

The methods described for assessing the operatability of a catalytic converter fitted in the exhaust of an internal-combustion engine make use of the fact that the conversion-onset temperature for a catalytic converter is higher the older the catalytic converter is. Improved variants of the invention also make use of the fact that, after conversion has started, a catalytic converter produces less heat per unit time from the combustion of oxidizable exhaust components the older it is. A first method is designed to investigate when a catalytic converter starts converting and to designate the converter as operable when the measured temperature lies below a given comparison temperature. A second method is designed to operate the catalytic converter in accordance with precisely defined conditions and to investigate how long it takes for conversion to begin. If the measured length of time is less than a comparison time, the catalytic converter is operable. A third method is designed to estimate the temperature of the catalytic converter by means of a model. As soon as the estimated temperature reaches a comparison temperature, the temperature of the catalytic converter is measured to determine whether it has exceeded the estimated temperature. If this is the case, the catalytic converter is considered to be operable. Devices as proposed by the invention include equipment for carrying out the operations necessary for the methods described.
