Abstract

411,377. Treating exhaust gases. LANGTON, H. M., 26, Devonshire Terrace, Lancaster Gate, London, LUSH, E. J., The Laboratory, Powder Mill Lane, Dartford, Kent, and WATSON, G. P., Sandybank, Banks Road, Sandbanks, Bournemouth. Nov. 18, 1933, No. 32902. Divided on 413,744. [Class 7 (ii).] Exhaust gases are passed through or over two or more catalysts in series, or are wholly or partially byepassed around the whole or part of one or more of said catalysts. The gases pass into a pipe 3 from the cylinders through apertures 2 separated by partitions 7 of wire mesh, pumice, or asbestos which carry a catalyst operative at high temperatures, such as iron vanadate, and are mixed with air drawn in past a non-return valve 9 or forced in by a pump. A chamber 4 is mounted over a projecting end of the pipe 3, and a ringed valve 5 located at the end of the pipe causes the gases to pass through perforations and through or around carriers 8 of asbestos mat impregnated with a catalyst operative at low temperatures, such as mixed copper and manganese oxide promoted with cerium oxide, before being discharged through the pipe 6. The valve 5 may be spring or gravity controlled so that it opens when the pressure or velocity of the gases rises and enables them to pass directly from the pipe 3 to the pipe 6. Alternatively, the valve may be opened as the throttle opens, or be controlled by an engine governor or manually. In a modified construction, both types of catalyst are mounted in the chamber 4 and the valve 5 then allows the gases to pass or byepass through both types of catalyst. Specification 413,744 is referred to.
