Abstract
413,744. Purifying exhaust gases. LANGTON, H. M., 26, Devonshire Terrace, Bayswater, London, LUSH, E. J., The Laboratory, Powder Mill Lane, Dartford, Kent, and WATSON, G. P., Sandybank, Banks Road, Sandbanks, Bournemouth. Nov. 18, 1933, No. 15309/32. [Class 7 (ii).] Exhaust gases with or without the admixture of air are passed first over or through one or more catalysts reactive at high temperatures, such as metallic vanadates or molybdates and afterwards over one or more catalysts reactive at low temperatures, such as iron oxide with chromium oxide as a promoter, copper and manganese oxides promoted with cerium oxide or with cobalt and silver oxides or with one or more of the rare earths. The exhaust gases enter a manifold 1 through apertures 2 and pass through partitions 7 supporting the high temperature catalyst, into an exhaust pipe 3, at the end of which is a valve 5. When the velocity of the gases is low the valve is closed and the gases pass through perforations in the pipe 3 into a chamber 4 housing asbestos mats 8 which carry the low temperature catalyst. As the speed of the exhaust gases rises, the valve opens and allows them to enter a pipe 6 without passing through the chamber 4 and the low temperature catalyst. Air may be admitted to the pipe 3 either by the injector action of the gases, by the motion of a vehicle, or by a pump ; or the air may enter through a spring-loaded valve 9. The gases may be filtered before contact with the catalysts. The Specification enumerates the proportions by weight of suitable catalysts and refers to Specification 411,377.
