Two-stroke-cycle engines; cylinders, ports of.- In a two-stroke gas engine in which scavenging- air is admitted by ports a before the admission of fresh gas or combustible mixture through ports c, so that a layer of air e exists between the spent gases and the combustible mixture, a rotary valve or other controlling-member g in the exhaust pipe f is arranged to close the exhaust as soon as the spent gases have been evacuated, but before the combustible mixture reaches the exhaust ports, so as to prevent loss of the fresh charge.
