Exhaust, dealing with.-In four-stroke engines having a single valve controlling exhaust and airadmission, the flow of these gases is further controlled by a number of automatic valves grouped separately in the exhaust and air conduits, and the pressure of the air charge may be such as to cause the passage of a small current of air through the exhaust passage during the compression, working, and exhaust strokes so as to assist in the expulsion of the exhaust gases. In this case the automatic exhaust valves may be omitted.
