Abstract

317,790. Maschinenfabrik Augsburg- Nurnberg Akt.-Ges. Aug. 22, 1928, [Convention date]. Cylinders, ports and pipes for.-In two-stroke engines, a single set of ports is used for the inlet of gas and scavenging-air to the cylinder, a valve being arranged to control the admission of both charges to the ports. Fig. 1 shows a doubleacting engine having exhaust ports d<1>, d<2> for the two ends of the cylinder, and a single set of ports c for air and gas; or there may be two sets of ports c, one for each end of the cylinder. The admission of gas and air to the ports c is controlled by a rotary valve j having a central passage m adapted to connect the gas-inlet pipe h to the inlet passage e as shown in Fig. 2. The airinlet pipe i communicates with passages at opposite sides of the passage m, and having air ports k<1>, l<1> for one end of the cylinder, and air ports k<2>, l<2> for the other end. Hence, as the valve rotates, scavenging-air is first admitted through the port k', then gas through the passage m, and finally air again through the port l<1>. This last admission of air clears the passage e of gas, and prevents loss of this gas during the next scavenging operation. In modifications, the gas-inlet pipe is arranged along the centre of the valve, and is surrounded by the air-inlet pipe.
