Abstract

1,151,561. Admission pipes; valves. H. WESLAKE. April 22, 1966 [Jan.22, 1965], No.2988/65. Heading F1B. Each cylinder of an I. C. engine is provided with two valve-controlled inlet ports, which are both fed with mixture from a single carburetter, and additional valve means are provided for successively opening or successively closing two inlet passages, which passages respectively convey mixture to the two inlet ports of each cylinder. As shown in Fig. 12, the left hand group of three cylinders is fed from carburetter 53 through manifold 47/50, the right hand group being fed from carburetter 54 through manifold 48/51. Manifold branches 47 and 48 are interconnected at 60, are controlled by manually operated, linked throttle valves 55, 57, and feed one set of inlet ports 13. Branches 50, 51, also inter-connected, feed the other set of inlet ports 14 and are controlled by linked valves 56, 58, which are operated by a pneumatic motor 63, responsive to the suction in inter-connecting pipe 60. Alternatively, the motor 63 may be responsive to engine speed. In either case, valves 56, 58 open after and close before valves 55, 57. In an alternative arrangement, Figs. 1-3 (not shown), an elongated, ported slide valve is movable from one extreme position (in which both sets of inlet passages are open) to successively and progressively close one and then both sets of passages. The slide valve may be controlled in response to engine suction or speed or the position of the engine throttle valve. Each cylinder may be provided with one or two exhaust ports. Swirl of the gases in the engine combustion chambers may be promoted by arcuate deflecting members (not shown) on the heads of the inlet valves or by projections formed on the surface of the combustion chamber, Fig. 9 (not shown) or in the valve cavities, over which projections the gases sweep.
