Abstract

948,686. Valves, valve-gear and intake systems for I.C. engines. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Dec. 6, 1962 [Dec. 12, 1961], No. 45764/61. Heading F1B. A first inlet valve 9 effectively closes the inlet port during a short period at the end of the induction stroke, during which period a second inlet valve 5 is opened to admit mixture to a space 1 containing the spark plug 12. A mixture of variable richness is supplied through passage 8, which is unthrottled, and a rich mixture of fixed strength is supplied through passage 4. The first inlet port is effectively closed towards the end of the induction stroke by a mark 10 on the valve stem. The valves 9, 5, are actuated simultaneously by a single cam, the effective opening of the valve 5 being delayed until the required moment by a cylindrical bore 11 beyond the valve seat. The mixture is supplied to passage 4 by a known carburetter and the air in passage 8 is carburetted by a fuel jet with adjustable flow so that the mixture richness in passage 8 is increased for increasing power output. At idling, air only is supplied through passage 8. In a modification the valves 5, 9, are operated by separate overhead cams and the bore 11 is omitted.
